Composition

I found a great website that provided a basic definition of composition as well as some good guidelines to follow when taking photos.

http://photoinf.com/General/GloriaHopkins/CompositioninNaturePhotographyandtheElementsofaPhotograph.htm

"Composition is the structure, organization, and visual characteristics of the elements in your photograph. Compositions can be complex, powerful, boring, moody, uplifting, and a plethora of other adjectives" (Hopkins).

Below are some suggested guidelines to follow when taking photographs.
  • Don't center your subject unless doing so stengthens the image
  • Arrange your scene so objects in the image guide the viewer's eye around the image. This gives you a small measure of control over how your work is viewed.
  • Shoot in side light to reveal the texture of your subject and add a 3-D feel.
It's important to remember that the compositition guidelines listed above are tools, not necessarily rules that have to be followed.

Above all, experiment, have fun, and play around with your camera and settings to create something truly fantastic!

Three views

Here are three images of a tree in my yard that were taken at three different times during the day. The top one was taken around 8:00 a.m. It wasn't sunny out at this point, but I could see behind the clouds that it was going to be a nice day.
The middle image was taken around 11:30. It was a beautiful day with the sun shining and blue skies. I like how the light hit the branches on this one.
The bottom one was taken around 4:30 in the afternoon just as the sun was going down. It looks very similar to the first as it the cloud cover took away the bright light.
I tried to take a night shot, but for whatever reason, my camera would not work. I think I may have to change the settings a bit for next time.

Complementary and Monochrone Images

Here are two images that depict a complementary image and a monochromatic image.

Here is my macro collage project. The photos are of everyday items you see in, out, and around the house. I tried to use color, B&W, and texture in the pictures to add a little pizazz. :)

Westminster Falls

# 1 - Here is a photo of the Westminster Falls. This was taken around 3:00 in the afternoon. I haven't figured out at what time of day would give me the best shot as far as the sun goes, but I thought it was a nice scenic photo.
# 2 - The second photo is of Westminster Falls at another angle, taken at the same time of day. I tried to get closer to the falls on this one, but it was too icy down the embankment. A closer photo could show the details of the falls a bit more as it is really beautiful.

Hello and welcome!

Welcome to my page! This is my first blog (does Facebook count?) and am experimenting with the layout a bit. I look forward to this semester and can't wait to see what we all come up with!
