Portraits

Here are a few unedited photos that I have taken. I really like the soft look of the black and white photos. I plan to do some photo editing tomorrow and will post more photos then.

Watermark

Here is another photo using the text tool in Gimp

Text Tool

Cloning Tool

Here is my clone and stamp assignment. I erased the bucket and telephone pole that was in the original photo and used the clone stamp to blend in the background. I used the blur tool to blend it in even more so that it looked like the trees originally belonged there.

Filters

I had some fun trying out the different filters in Gimp. On the top photo with the tree, I combined two different filters using the drop shadow and the ripple filters. It was an interesting end result. Kind of cool looking.
I really like the second photo with the bridge. I ended up using the cubism filter. It added some texture and depth and I am pleased with the end result.

Dodge and Burn

Here is my dodge and burn image with the original photo above. I played around with the gradient button and chose the linear button to create the rainbow effect. I then used the ellipse select tool and created the round circle to highlight the orchid in the middle. I used the burn tool on the outside, in the highlights range at 50 exposure. After, I inverted the circle and used the dodge key to highlight certain areas in the flower. I tried to make the inner circle the main focal point. Finally, to add some artistic flare, I tried to make the outside of the circle look like flames to soften the effect.

Gimp Attempt # 1

Ok, so this is my first attempt at using Gimp. I changed the color of the sky and of the water, and then added my children snowmobiling and tubing. I am having so much fun using Gimp, but because I am new at this, I am experimenting with what works and what doesn't. I realize my son tubing isn't exactly proportionate, but it's ok for now. More pics to follow soon. :)

Landscape

Here are some photos I took this week. The top one is one I took today of my kids and I snowmobiling and sledding. I wanted to capture what landscape really means, "associating people and a place". I thought I was able to represent it well in this photo. The second photo was a picture of the Connecticut River along Route 12 in Charlestown, NH. It was taken around 5:30 in the evening just as the sun was going down. I really liked how the trees framed this photo and how the light hit the mountains and the water creating a soft, serene look. The bottom two photos are of the Springfield Dam overlooking Ascutney Mountain. I thought they were really pretty. I tried to apply the rule of thirds in the third photo so as to to make is more visually pleasing. I'm not sure how I did, but I think they captured the natural beauty of the mountains.

Rule of Thirds

Here are two pictures of a church in Bellows Falls, VT. The bottom one is supposed to be a centered shot from the bottom of the steps on the road. However, the top photo is angled to the right, adding a bit more dimension. I like the top photo better!

Framing Slideshow

Here is my framing slideshow. I admit these are not the greatest, but I think with a little more practice (and better weather), I could create something even better! Sorry for the delay this week...

Composition

I found a great website that provided a basic definition of composition as well as some good guidelines to follow when taking photos.

http://photoinf.com/General/GloriaHopkins/CompositioninNaturePhotographyandtheElementsofaPhotograph.htm

"Composition is the structure, organization, and visual characteristics of the elements in your photograph. Compositions can be complex, powerful, boring, moody, uplifting, and a plethora of other adjectives" (Hopkins).

Below are some suggested guidelines to follow when taking photographs.
  • Don't center your subject unless doing so stengthens the image
  • Arrange your scene so objects in the image guide the viewer's eye around the image. This gives you a small measure of control over how your work is viewed.
  • Shoot in side light to reveal the texture of your subject and add a 3-D feel.
It's important to remember that the compositition guidelines listed above are tools, not necessarily rules that have to be followed.

Above all, experiment, have fun, and play around with your camera and settings to create something truly fantastic!

Three views

Here are three images of a tree in my yard that were taken at three different times during the day. The top one was taken around 8:00 a.m. It wasn't sunny out at this point, but I could see behind the clouds that it was going to be a nice day.
The middle image was taken around 11:30. It was a beautiful day with the sun shining and blue skies. I like how the light hit the branches on this one.
The bottom one was taken around 4:30 in the afternoon just as the sun was going down. It looks very similar to the first as it the cloud cover took away the bright light.
I tried to take a night shot, but for whatever reason, my camera would not work. I think I may have to change the settings a bit for next time.

Complementary and Monochrone Images

Here are two images that depict a complementary image and a monochromatic image.

Here is my macro collage project. The photos are of everyday items you see in, out, and around the house. I tried to use color, B&W, and texture in the pictures to add a little pizazz. :)

Westminster Falls

# 1 - Here is a photo of the Westminster Falls. This was taken around 3:00 in the afternoon. I haven't figured out at what time of day would give me the best shot as far as the sun goes, but I thought it was a nice scenic photo.
# 2 - The second photo is of Westminster Falls at another angle, taken at the same time of day. I tried to get closer to the falls on this one, but it was too icy down the embankment. A closer photo could show the details of the falls a bit more as it is really beautiful.

Hello and welcome!

Welcome to my page! This is my first blog (does Facebook count?) and am experimenting with the layout a bit. I look forward to this semester and can't wait to see what we all come up with!
