I found a great website that provided a basic definition of composition as well as some good guidelines to follow when taking photos.
http://photoinf.com/General/GloriaHopkins/CompositioninNaturePhotographyandtheElementsofaPhotograph.htm"Composition is the structure, organization, and visual characteristics of the elements in your photograph. Compositions can be complex, powerful, boring, moody, uplifting, and a plethora of other adjectives" (Hopkins).
Below are some suggested guidelines to follow when taking photographs.
- Don't center your subject unless doing so stengthens the image
- Arrange your scene so objects in the image guide the viewer's eye around the image. This gives you a small measure of control over how your work is viewed.
- Shoot in side light to reveal the texture of your subject and add a 3-D feel.
It's important to remember that the compositition guidelines listed above are tools, not necessarily rules that have to be followed.
Above all, experiment, have fun, and play around with your camera and settings to create something truly fantastic!
